I have a distinct memory of the first time I discovered my mother's work clothes from her days of being a young attorney. It was a moment of awe and admiration, as I picked through long pleated silk skirts and power suits from the late 80's and early 90's. And it seems to be on a lot of designer's minds again today: what can our women wear to work?
It's always a difficult dilemma. You want to look polished and good, but you feel strange if you're too dressy in the office. And of course, you still want to express your personal style (fitting in is not the idea here).
The beautiful and light sportswear has caught my eye more than anything in the initial New York shows this week. A lot of designers seem a little lost for Spring, but the ones who are holding their own have kept things fresh and clean.
