View From Outside

As we approach the end of the Spring runway shows, I thought I would toss up these photos of mine from NY fashion week. To me, they are quintessential fashion week; the involved fashionistas posing for the handsome photographer....and me taking a picture of the whole thing!
Something about this moment is just classic:

And now on their way into the shows, these girls are anything but classic:

Here's to another season - the industry is really trying to scrape it together for us, despite the Great Recession...and I'd say they're doing OK.

Lots of trend analyses to come!!

Cloggin' Time

To continue with yesterday's ode to the nineties, I must show you some clogs. Whose fault was it anyway? Was it Lagerfeld with his hay-romping Spring collection from last year? Is it the new nineties obsession?

They are really here, in a way that surprises and delights me! Here's a few street shots of clog-rocking girls.

And, click here to see some of my favorites out there on the market.

Smells Like Teen Spirit II

If you've seen Chloe Sevigny's collection for Opening Ceremony, then you know what I'm talking about. The nineties explosion on the runway is here to stay, and while I often struggle with it, this lovely lady at NY fashion week made it totally justifiable.

AND she's wearing a suede dress...I can't get enough!

Cliche OK

It's true, New Yorkers have a reputation for ensembles tous en noir, often with little or no color. This week at Lincoln Center, these ladies show us it's not ALL bad to wear a lot of black...

Business Wonderful II

Some reinforcement for yesterday's profession of love for the new business look. She was my favorite look of the day at Lincoln Center fashion week today!

Hester Street Fair, Manhattan

I branched out yesterday and checked out the Hester Street Fair. As a loyal Brooklyn Flea lover, I was wary of a Manhattan flea market for fear of high prices and picked over goods...BUT I was pleasantly surprised! The market is small, but all the pieces there were special and not over-priced. I highly recommend it!

Apparently all it takes to look cute on a street corner is an over the shoulder bag and a pop of color. Love the oxford shoes too!

Militario

There's no denying it; the military jacket has exploded onto the fashion scene this season. It is ubiquitous, and if you don't have one already...well I would get working on it!

Here are a few of my favorites. Click on any designer's name to see their full runway show.

Sister Act

It was a weekend of style - family style - in Fort Greene last weekend! I found two sets of sisters while I was out and about on Saturday that impressed me with their cool vintage finds.

Mariet & Julia
Two Colorado natives - love the print mixing!

Leah & Sarah
Well coordinated with their Native American inspired weaves!

Rein 'Er In!

It's a bit of a capsule trend, but it's one of my favorites of the season: the equestrienne. It fits in perfectly with the tailored, menswear inspired theme of Fall, but with the added flair of riding gear and horse related imagery.

You don't have to actually be a dressage expert, but it sure looks good to dress like one!

Shooting On Location

It was an impromptu photo shoot yesterday at the Brooklyn Flea!

I was drawn to Marina's look right away - the straw hat and denim combo - it was an outfit Phoebe Philo would approve of. Sometimes it's the simplest elements that make for the most fabulous outfits!

Marina's boyfriend Sebastian turned out to be a photographer and gave me some tips to set up this shot. The ladder was a flea purchase. Thanks Sebastian!

Caroline, Q Train, Manhattan - Brooklyn Commute

Caroline, Graphic Designer

It's difficult to dress for this time of year; we're in transition. Every other day it's hot and cold, and you could get rained on at any moment...solution? A long classic trench - lightweight and long - provides coverage when you need it but isn't too hot.

I caught Caroline on the Q train going over the Manhattan bridge. She's got all her bases covered: the casual boyfriend shirt and the camel trench. Since the Fall runway shows camel is the only color on anyone's mind; Style.com is calling it the "new black."

The whole look is lightened up with these fun sandals from Zara. Love!

She Ain't No Wolf

My coworker Rebecca was a dear and posed for me in this dress I've been admiring for weeks. It's Lark and Wolff by Steven Alan for Urban Outfitters, and says "Wolf in Sheep's Clothes" on the front.

One of the things I've discovered since starting this blog is that everyone is wearing Urban all the time. It's a bit overwhelming...but you can't ignore the awesomeness of anything by Steven Alan.

Unfortunately the Lark & Wolff line was in UO a couple years ago so it's not in stores anymore, but it's all over Ebay! Click here to shop.

Sharing Is Caring

Sirianne, Zoe & Veronika

If you're wondering why these ladies look so nice together, it's because they're all wearing each other's clothes. Sometimes to find the greatest look you need to look no further than your friend's closet!

There's a nineties vibe going on here, and it's perfectly in tune with the Spring exuberance in the air (now that winter is finally over). So get out your denim jacket and your flowery dresses because Blossom is back!

Sorry I couldn't help it . . .

Lorimer Stop, L Train, Brooklyn

Erin, Graphic Designer
Even though she looks great in it, Erin told me she's looking forward to not having to wear her hood anymore. Hopefully after today, she won't have to...

I love the simple military look of this coat; it's a trend that's been noticed on all fronts for both Spring and Fall this year. Fatigue coats are selling out everywhere, but there's some beautiful ones to be found at the flea or thrift store.

But the BEST part is the shoes! I love these shoes so much, they were the first thing I noticed on Erin, and it must have been fate that drew me to them because it turns out they're a label I've been stalking for months. Check it out: Osborn Shoes, all made in Guatemala using fair trade and locally sourced materials. It can't get any better than that!
